Anyone who gardens understands the importance of having either a wheelbarrow or a garden cart to help with the jobs of moving heavy items around outside. They both make it significantly easier to accomplish some of the tasks that gardeners do, such as shifting and applying mulch, hauling rocks, or moving large plants across the yard to a new home. So how do you choose which one is a better fit for you and your needs?
Garden carts have the added benefit of a second wheel that helps greatly with stability. It can be easy for a whole load to tip over in a wheelbarrow, and for that reason, garden carts are a better choice for the young, the elderly, and people without a lot of strength. They are more expensive, however, and a greater investment in space as well. But if you’re an avid gardener, garden carts are definitely more stable.
Although easy to push and pull, garden carts are harder to maneuver through paths or tight spaces. The single wheel of a wheelbarrow gives them a better turning radius and makes them easier for people to move. They can be tilted side to side when they’re being pushed. Wheelbarrows can be hard to push and pull up a hill, as they can easily fall to the side if you’re not strong enough to keep them upright.
Wheelbarrows have one wheel and are generally curved in the front, perfect for pouring out loads. They have two handles, while garden carts have a long connected bar. They have straight sides and front, while the back is generally open. They have two wheels in the front and often seem bulkier than a wheelbarrow. In addition to their front wheels they often have a third or two more wheels in the back.
Garden carts are better suited to hauling lighter materials, such as yard trash or harvests from your garden. They are square in design, which makes it difficult to dump things from them. On the other hands, wheelbarrows are designed better to haul heavy things like sand and rock, and the shape of them makes it easier to life up the handles and dump out the load.
No matter what your need is, you’re sure to find that either a wheelbarrow or a garden cart can help you in the garden. Although they can be used interchangeably, each does have some benefits over the other for certain jobs.
