No matter how careful you are when using your wheelbarrow after a while it will stop being as useful as before. Rusting spots in the bucket can get so large that they are hard to repair, and the metal holding the tire in place can get bent and out of shape over time. Once this happens you might be tempted to throw it away, but there is actually a way to bring new life to your old wheelbarrow – turning it into a stylish planter for your yard!
Getting it Ready for Plants
Plants require drainage holes so that the soil they’re in doesn’t become so waterlogged as to kill them. Using a 3/4 inch drill bit, space the holes evenly all along the bottom of the wheelbarrow. These should be about 3-6 inches apart. Then get some wire mesh and form it to the bucket of the wheelbarrow to keep the soil from falling out of the drainage holes. Water will be able to pass through easily, but the soil won’t.
Preparing the Soil
Before you fill the wheelbarrow with soil make sure to find its place in your yard. It will get heavy once full! It will make an awesome focal point or can be used at the end of a path. Once it’s in place you will need to put in a potting mix. This can be store bought or a personal blend that you have made. Leave a few inches at the top.
Planting and Mulching
Pick your favorite plants and plant them in your wheelbarrow, adhering to spacing guidelines so they’ll grow really well. Using a variety of plants, including cascading ones to add some drama to the planter, will keep visual interest. Once you have the flowers arranged the way you want you will need to add a layer of mulch around them. This will keep the soil moist and help stop any weeds from growing. You can use traditional mulch or even pebbles or small rocks, depending on the style you want.
Don’t forget – you can paint your wheelbarrow if you don’t like the color or style. There are paints available for wood, plastic, or fiberglass, so you should be able to find one that will work on your wheelbarrow. Any style of wheelbarrow will work for this project, and it won’t matter what it is made of. You can express yourself however you want!
